COVID-19 and Erectile Dysfunction
The hidden challenge in times of Corona
The global spread of COVID-19 has not only affected the physical health of many people, but has also had unexpected effects on mental health and well-being. In addition to the obvious health problems, there is a lesser known but serious link between COVID-19 and sexual health problems, particularly erectile dysfunction, also known as "corona erectile dysfunction". In this article, we want to take a closer look at this link and suggest possible solutions for those affected.
Long-term consequences even with moderate infection course
In connection with SARS-CoV-2, the focus is on theories and scientific findings that also deal with long-term consequences. Due to the relative newness of the virus, there is comparatively little confirmed information on this topic so far. Nevertheless, previous practices and numerous international studies show that even people who had a moderate course of infection can still suffer from the consequences weeks or even months after the disease. It is becoming clear that a moderate course of the disease is no guarantee of being spared long-term consequences.
Those affected are often considerably limited in their performance and struggle with symptoms such as chronic fatigue, difficulty concentrating or physical complaints such as heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, headaches and pain in the limbs and joints. The most common long-term consequences include diseases of the lungs, nervous system, blood vessels or muscles. It is striking that reports of erection and potency problems (erectile dysfunction) or even cases of impotence caused by corona are increasing.
Various studies have found that men infected with corona have particular courses of disease. The more severe the course of the disease, the more likely it is that the men will subsequently suffer from erectile dysfunction.
Theories for the connection between corona and erectile dysfunction
One theory cites an impaired output of nitric oxide (NO) due to infection from inside the vascular cells as the cause of potency problems. Nitric oxide is an important component in the chain of reactions necessary for an erection. There are also indications that the coronavirus may affect the production of the sex hormone testosterone and lead to increased oestradiol levels (female hormone levels). This phenomenon has already been observed in research and confirmed that oestradiol levels can generally increase during infections, while testosterone levels decrease.
Erectile dysfunction can be the result. Chronic erectile dysfunction increases disproportionately with age. Already at the age of 60, every fourth man suffers from permanent impotence, at the age of 70 even every third. It is assumed that the number of unreported cases is even higher. This is because erectile dysfunction (ED) is still a taboo subject in society. A natural decline in testosterone levels with age can lead to potency problems. Often, an unhealthy lifestyle is the main cause: smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity and lack of exercise can damage the blood vessels and impair blood flow in the erectile tissue of the penis. Sometimes the dysfunction is also a result of taking medication, injuries or surgery. Finally, stress, depression, anxiety disorders or stressful events such as the Corona pandemic can lead to erectile dysfunction.
Corona study by Professor Dr Frank Sommer: Effects on sexual life?
The Corona study, conducted by Professor Dr Frank Sommer, examined the impact of the pandemic on sexual life. The average participant age was 46 and all participants had been in a committed relationship for at least six months. In addition, almost two-thirds of the respondents said they worked mainly in a home office.
The study found that time for sex and intimacy has increased significantly due to the spread of the virus and increased restraint in the home. 78 per cent of respondents used the crisis to make the most of it and experienced a new quality to their sexuality. This is due to the increased possibility of exchanging feelings and love through living together all the time. However, the situation changes when there are children or other relatives in the household. Homeschooling and a noisy household can disrupt intimacy and quickly dampen desire in the bedroom.
Sexual lockdown occurs when one partner becomes infected with the virus. Then, for fear of infection, sexual intercourse is completely avoided. The fear of the virus logically depresses the mood and libido, and worries about work and money often also prevent any real desire from arising. Overall, 32 percent of men said that external factors influence their desire for sex.
The impact of COVID-19 on sexual health
The impact of COVID-19 on sexual health, particularly erectile dysfunction, is a relevant issue that should not be underestimated. It is important that affected individuals are aware of the potential impact and take proactive measures to protect their health. Open communication, prevention, professional counselling and modern technologies can work together to support people struggling with these challenges and enable them to live fulfilling lives.
